Bronco Men's Basketball Signs JC Transfer

April 23, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's basketball team announced the signing of 6'-2" guard Doron Perkins from Southwestern Oregon Community College to a national letter of intent, Head Coach Dick Davey announced during the NCAA signing period that began April 16.

Perkins, a native of Anchorage, Alaska, is currently the only Santa Clara signee during the late NCAA signing period that began last week and runs through May 15. He joins 6'-10" high school senior Sean Denison from Nelson, B.C. as the Broncos' only two signees during the 2002-03 season. The Broncos had three available scholarships due to the departure of seniors Brad and Cord Anderson and sophomore guard Bakari Altheimer. Rising junior guard Ethan Rohde was awarded one of the three scholarships for the 2003-04 season after serving as a walk-on the last two seasons.

"Doron is an extremely athletic guard who can score in a variety of ways," said Santa Clara Head Coach Dick Davey. "I really expect him to be able to provide a major contribution to our program right away. With Kyle (Bailey) returning from his back injury, the production we received this year of a number of younger players and the addition of Doron, I expect our backcourt to be a real strength for us next season."

As a sophomore at Southwestern Oregon CC, Perkins finished second in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) in scoring and assists with averages of 25.0 points and 6.5 assists per game. He also finished sixth in rebounding with 9.9 per game and was twice selected the NWAACC's Southern Region Player of the Year, marking only the second time a player has received this honor in both seasons of participation.

Perkins led SWOCC to a 42-16 record in two seasons and helped the team advance to the NWAACC title as a freshman and consecutive league tournament appearances. During the month of February, 2003, he registered three triple-doubles in points, rebounds and assists. He poured-in a career-high 49 points in an 89-80 win over Treasure Valley in a December holiday tournament and was named to the South squad at the league's annual all-star game.
