Santa Clara Releases Men's Basketball Schedule

Sept. 28, 2002

  • 2002-2003 Men's Basketball Schedule

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Santa Clara University men's basketball team will play more than half its regular-season schedule, including five of its first seven games, within the confines of the recently-reconstructed Leavey Center, according to the team's 2002-2003 schedule released today. The school also announced it will be moving its start times up from 7:30 to 7 p.m.

Season and individual game tickets go on sale Tuesday, Oct. 1 online by clicking here or by calling the athletic ticket office at 408/554-4660. A variety of new ticket packages and seating options are available, including midcourt floor section 109 and an affordable family plan. Complete pricing and package information is available by clicking here.

The Broncos open their season Friday, Nov. 22 at the University of Pacific before playing five of its next six games in the Leavey Center. Among the non-conference highlights on the home schedule are a Nov. 30 contest against rival San Jose State, a Dec. 7 matchup against the University of Washington and a Dec. 14 game against Nevada. The Broncos also face UC Santa Cruz, Montana State and Wright State in the Leavey Center. Road contests include Fresno State, UMBC, Loyola (Md.) and Nevada-Las Vegas.

"Having the ability to play home games early in the season certainly is a welcome departure from the last couple of years," said head coach Dick Davey. "With the construction that has taken place the last two seasons in the Leavey Center, we have only been able to play a handful of early season games at home. I think this year's schedule suits our young team well and will play a pivotal role in preparing for the typically-tough West Coast Conference schedule."

The 36th annual Cable Car Classic is scheduled for Dec. 27-28 at the Leavey Center. Santa Clara will face Mississippi Valley State on the first day of the tournament at 6 p.m. with Princeton from the Ivy League and Texas A&M from the Big 12 Conference matching-up in the second game.

The Broncos play their first three WCC games of the league season on the road, beginning with a Jan. 11 contest at the University of San Diego. Following contests at Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara faces San Francisco in its WCC home opener in a rare Wednesday night contest on Jan. 22.

Santa Clara closes out the WCC regular-season with home contests against Gonzaga and Portland on Feb. 27 and March 1. The annual WCC Tournament is scheduled for March 7-10 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the University of San Diego campus.
