The Santa Clara University men's basketball team will begin practice for the 2002-2003 season on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. in the Leavey Center. The Broncos will conduct a total of 26 practices and two scrimmages prior to its Nov. 15 exhibition contest against the Olympic Club. All practices are conducted in the Leavey Center on the SCU campus.
Preseason Hoops Luncheon
The Santa Clara University men's basketball program will host its annual luncheon on Oct. 26 at Alumni Park, adjacent to the Leavey Center on the Mission Campus. The event begins at 10 a.m. with a team scrimmage that is open to the luncheon participants and their families. The players and coaches will be available after practice for autographs, photos and to introduce the 2002-2003 Bronco squad to SCU basketball supporters. Tickets on Sale Now
Season and individual game ickets for the 2002-2003 Santa Clara men's and women's basketball seasons are on sale through the athletic ticket office at 408/554-4660 or through the internet by clicking here. A number of new season, group, family and team ticket packages have been created and, for the first time in three years, seats in midcourt section 109 are being made available for purchase.
The 2002-2003 Schedule
For the first time in the last few years, the Broncos play eight of their 13 non-league games at the friendly confines of the Leavey Center. Following its Nov. 15 exhibition date against the Olympic Club, Santa Clara travels to Stockton to face the Tigers of Pacific on Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. The Broncos open their home schedule with a Nov. 25 contest against UC Santa Cruz. The home schedule also includes Montana State, San Jose State, Washington, Nevada, the 36th annual Cable Car Classic and Wright State. Santa Clara plays road games at Fresno State, UMBC, Loyola and UNLV prior to opening its WCC slate on Jan. 11 at San Diego. For a complete schedule click here. Updating the Broncos
Santa Clara returns two starters and seven letterwinners from last season's 13-15 squad that finished in third-place in the regular-season West Coast Conference standings. All-WCC junior guard Kyle Bailey and sophomore forward Jordan Legge started nearly every game last season and account for 30 of the 43 percent of the team's scoring that returns from a year ago. Other returning letterwinners include Bakari Altheimer, Ethan Rohde, Jim Howell and senior twins Brad and Cord Anderson.
Welcome Newcomers
Including two redshirt freshmen, the Broncos welcome a total of seven newcomers to the squad this season. Junior college transfers J.R. Patrick and Alex Kargbo join redshirt freshmen Scott Borchart and Linden Tibbets as the elder members of the group. The true freshman class includes Travis Niesen, Brandon Rohe and James Romey.
Head Coach Dick Davey
Entering his 11th season as Santa Clara's head coach, Dick Davey has a career coaching record of 173-117 (90-50 WCC), which includes three 20-win seasons and a 9-9 record in the West Coast Conference Tournament. Davey has compiled a 91-32 record at home for a .740 winning percentage. He is the WCC's winningest active coach and is the first Bronco coach to lead Santa Clara to four 10-plus win seasons in WCC play. A three-time WCC Coach of the Year, Davey has coached Santa Clara to three WCC regular season titles, one WCC Tournament title, three NCAA Tournament appearances and four wins over top 25 teams. The dean of WCC head coaches, Davey served as a Bronco assistant for 15 seasons (1977-92) and is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
SCU Games Broadcast On Bronco Radio Network
Santa Clara University men's basketball will continue to enjoy the widest radio coverage area in its history this season through the Bronco Radio Network. Radio Stations on the network include 10,000-watt KDIA-AM (1640) in San Francisco, Calif. and KSCU-FM (103.3) in Santa Clara. Popular play-by-play announcer Dave Lewis will return for his eighth season. Every Santa Clara men's basketball game will also be available via the Internet on the athletic department's official athletic website at www.SantaClaraBroncos.com.
