Ross Included on Team Canada National Team Roster

July 26, 2002

Canada Basketball and head coach Jay Triano announced that former Bronco men's basketball standout Steve Ross is included on the 12-man roster that will travel to Turkey on Sunday, July 28, 2002 for an exhibition tournament.

The Canadian squad is in training for the World Championship of Basketball in Indiana and the athletes travelling to Turkey are competing for a spot on that team.

Ross, a 6-7 forward from Victoria, British Columbia, averaged a team-high 15.7 points last season and ended his short Santa Clara career as one of the top outside shooters in school history. He is fifth on the Bronco list for career three-point attempts and sixth in makes in just one-and-a-half seasons after transferring to the Mission Campus from San Diego. He also ended his career as Santa Clara's fourth-best free throw shooter ever.

Ross hopes to join another more well-known former Bronco on the Canadian National Team. NBA all-star Steve Nash was Team Canada's top performer at the 2000 Olympic Games and is one of the most dynamic players on the international level.

The roster for the tournament in Turkey is as follows:

"The tournament in Turkey will provide us an opportunity to give some players a chance to play internationally for the Canadian national team and to see how they compete," said head coach Jay Triano. "Our first three games are against teams that will also be in Indiana so we'll be able to do some scouting as well."

Canada's schedule in Turkey is:

July 31vs Argentina
August 1vs Yugoslavia - in Canada's pool at world championships
August 2vs Algeria

The Canadian national men's team will re-group on August 10, 2002 in Vancouver where they will train for six days prior to playing China at GM Place on August 16th. Tickets for that game are available at www.ticketmaster.ca.

The squad will then travel to Ontario where they will compete in Summer Series 2002 against New Zealand and Russia, who are also preparing for the world championships. All game and ticket information is available at www.ticketmaster.ca.
