Cable Car Classic To Be Televised in High Definition

Dec. 10, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University Department of Athletics and HDNet have entered into an agreement for the leading all-high definition television (HDTV) national network to televise all four games of the 36th annual Cable Car Classic live, SCU Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick announced today.

In its 36th consecutive year, the 2002 Cable Car Classic features a field consisting of Princeton University, Texas A&M University, Mississippi Valley State University and host Santa Clara University. The event is scheduled for December 27-28 at the Leavey Center on the Santa Clara University campus. Friday's first game of the tournament features host Santa Clara against Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m. (PST) followed by Princeton facing Texas A&M. The consolation is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday with the championship game following.

"We are pleased that HDNet will be providing a live broadcast of the Cable Car Classic," said Levick. "This tournament is one of the country's most popular December holiday tournaments and this year's field promises to provide HDNet viewers with some great college basketball action."

Past participants in the Cable Car Classic include some of the most recognizable names in college basketball, including North Carolina, Michigan State, Purdue, Seton Hall, Maryland, Stanford, Alabama and Georgia Tech, among others. Founded in 1967 by Art Santodomingo and Harry Jupiter, the Cable Car Classic is reportedly the longest running holiday tournament in the nation.

"Watching college basketball action in high-definition is a truly compelling experience," said Mark Cuban, HDNet's Co-Founder and President. "We are excited to be adding the Cable Car Classic to HDNet's programming lineup."
