IRVINE, Calif. — Santa Clara beach volleyball battled in three close duals, including two that were decided by a single match, and fell against Concordia 3-2, Irvine Valley 3-2 and Cal State Bakersfield 4-1 on Friday at Irvine Valley College.

Julia Sangiacomo, Claire Doud, Brynn Paumen and Elizabeth Held each picked up their first match victory with Santa Clara on the day.

"I'm pleased that we won several matches today and am proud of Brynn and Gretchen winning their first match together at the 2s," associate head coach Jeff Alzina said. "Overall, I'm disappointed that we couldn't close the other tiebreak matches to win the duals."

Sangiacomo, making her team debut, paired with Doud at No. 4 and the duo claimed their first two matches of the day. They dispatched Concordia's Nickie Hughes/Mia Corippo 21-15, 22-20 before defeating Irvine Valley's Kristin Austin/Lexie Pereira 21-10, 21-17.

Michelle Shaffer/Kathryn Decker won for the fifth time in six matches at the No. 1 spot to start the day against the Eagles (3-0), downing Ellie Cary/Vanessa Bernzen 21-14, 21-17.

Paumen/Gretchen Reinert played two tight sets against at the second spot against the Lasers (1-3), defeating Kendall Nolan/Alaina Thomas 21-19, 21-19.

Held/Alex Anthony had the only Bronco win against the Roadrunners (5-1), bouncing back from a set down to top Leisa Elisaia/Jazleigh Ortiz (CSUB) 21-23, 21-11, 16-14.

The Broncos (0-8) wrap their Southern California swing Saturday at No. 12 Long Beach State for a Leap Day match at 9 a.m.
