SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Santa Clara volleyball rolled the momentum from its first victory of the season in to a two-win Saturday at the Big West/WCC Challenge. The Broncos topped Cal State Bakersfield 3-2 and Sacramento State 4-1 to bookend a 5-0 loss against CSUN.

Elizabeth Held/Alex Anthony (No. 3) and Claire Doud/Brynn Paumen (No. 4) each won two matches for the Broncos (3-10).

"We played very intentional and intelligently in our two dual victories today," associate head coach Jeff Alzina said. "We competed well and used the wind to our advantage often. Alex and Liz were especially consistent and played with great chemistry. Exacting revenge on Cal State Bakersfield from last week was special for us and showed we can learn from setbacks. Today should give us confidence facing a consistently tough team in Saint Mary's at home Tuesday."

Santa Clara began the morning with its second matchup of the season against the Roadrunners (5-2). Gretchen Reinert/Julia Sangiacomo dropped their first set at the second position and rebounded to defeat Emily Hansen/Hana Makonova 20-22, 21-15, 15-12. Held/Anthony (No. 3) and Doud/Paumen (No. 4) won in straight sets.

Kathryn LeBaron/Natalia Rentsch (No. 5) won the only set for the Broncos against the Matadors (4-0).

Reinert/Sangiacomo and Doud/Paumen won three-set matches against the Hornets (1-5), while Held/Anthony and Maeve Davitt/Natalia Rentsch (No. 5) each won in straight sets. Davitt/Rentsch won for the first time as a pair and the victory marked Davitt's first match win in her debut season.

The event also featured Saint Mary's and San Francisco from the WCC, which went 6-3 on the day. The Gaels won all three matches while the Dons claimed one dual.
