SPRINGVILLE, Utah – Led by sophomore Annie Freman, the Santa Clara women's golf team sits alone in second place, 13 strokes behind New Mexico State, after the first two rounds of the 12-team Hobble Creek Fall Classic, completed today at the Hobble Creek Golf Course.
The Broncos' two round total of 590 (296, 294) is one shot better than tournament co-host and fellow West Coast Conference member BYU. New Mexico State got off to a fast start scoring a tournament-best round of 287 over the first 18 holes to grab a 9-shot lead over the Broncos.
Freman was tied for the lead after the first round following a 1-under 70 that included an eagle on the par-5, 470-yard 18th hole. Her second round 76 leaves her in a tie for sixth, three shots behind leader Camille Orito of New Mexico State, at 4-over (146).
Four other Broncos placed among the top 12 finishers after the first 36 holes. Freshman Isabella Salant, in her first collegiate tournament, shot rounds of 75 and 73 to place 10th with a 6-over 148, one shot better than junior Monique Riley, who scored rounds of 75 and 74. Junior Ashley Noda tied for 12th with a two round total of 150 (+8).
Freshman Kristin Le, playing as an individual in her first collegiate tournament, also posted a first round 1-under 70 to seize a share of the lead, but a second round 80 put her in a tie for 12th with Noda and five other golfers.
Junior Meghan Shain rebounded from a first round 80 to post a 2-over 73 in the second round. She is tied for 27th at 153 (+11).
The Broncos will be grouped with New Mexico State and BYU for Tuesday's final round. The competition will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. (PT).
