FRESNO, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf 'A' team carded the lowest score of Monday's first two rounds with a second round 295 and sits three shots off the lead after the first day of competition at the Fresno State Classic, played at the 6,217-yard, par-72 San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno.
The Broncos scored a first round 301 and trailed tournament host Fresno State by four shots after the first 18 holes. They were able to gain one shot on the Bulldogs by scoring their second lowest team round of the season over the second round.
Santa Clara's 'B' team, which consists of just four players, scored a second round 311, and will enter Tuesday's final round in fifth place with a 631 total, eight shots behind Sacramento State (623).
Junior Meghan Shain is alone in second place on the individual leaderboard, one shot behind Fresno State's Madchen Ly heading into Tuesday's final round. Shain compiled a 3-over 147 with rounds of 74 and 73 to hold a one-shot lead over a trio of golfers, including teammate Kristin Le.
Le had Santa Clara's best round of the day with an even-par 72 in the second round to climb six spots on the leaderboard ending the day with a 4-over 148.
Monique Riley matched her career-best score with a second round 73 (+1) to tie for sixth place with a 5-over 149 total. Annie Freman scored identical rounds of 76 to place in a tie for 12th at 8-over 152.
Playing in her first tournament of the season, senior Casey Briggs was the 'B' team's top scorer with rounds of 77 and 78 to end the day in 16th place with a 155 (+11) total. Kaci McCartan, also participating in her first event of the season, was a shot behind Briggs with identical rounds of 78 to tie for 17th with a 156 (+12) total.
Freshman Isabella Salant also carded a 156 (+12) total with rounds 81 and 75.
Tuesday's final round action will begin at 8:00 a.m. (PT) and groups will tee off every nine minutes from the first tee box.
