KAPALUA, Maui – Improving their team score every round the Santa Clara women's golf team claimed a ninth-place finish at the 15-team Anuenue Spring Break Classic, concluded Wednesday at Kapalua's The Bay Course.
Wednesday's final round 301 followed earlier scores of 305 and 306 putting the Broncos in ninth-place with a 912 total. "Overall I'm really happy with our finish," Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly said. "There was a great field at this tournament so I'm definitely pleased with where we finished."
The event featured seven top-50 teams in the recent Golfweek.com rankings with No. 31 UC Davis capturing the team title with an 863 total, eight shots better than runner-up No. 49 Texas.
"We were leading for a little while during round one and that's encouraging going into our final two tournaments," Kelly added.
Junior Ashley Noda carded a career-low tying 1-over 73 in the final round to climb into a tie for 30th with teammate Monique Riley and five other golfers at 227.
Sophomore Annie Freman shot a final round 2-over 74 to tie for 37th at 228. Junior Meghan Shain claimed 40th place with a 230 total after Wednesday's 77. Freshman also shot 77 and moved into 61st place at 239.
Competing as an individual junior Kaci McCartan scored a final round 79 to tie for 47th at 232.
UC Davis' Andrea Wong took medalist honors with a 7-under 209 after a final round 70. Wong's teammate Paige Lee finished runner-up at 212 while Oregon's Caroline Inglis was the only other golfer to finish below par at 1-under 215.
The Broncos are back in action Apr. 6 playing in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Ariz.
