Women’s Golf Places Second At Rain-Shortened Hobble Creek Classic

SPRINGVILLE, Utah – The Santa Clara women’s golf team claimed second place at the 12-team Hobble Creek Fall Classic after Tuesday’s final round was cancelled due to rain and unplayable conditions. Scores from yesterday’s 36 holes of play will stand as the final results.

The Broncos had the second-best team score behind New Mexico State in each of Monday’s first two rounds with a 296 and 294, and fell 13 strokes behind the champion Aggies with a 590 (+22) total. Tournament co-host BYU finished one shot behind the Broncos for third place.

“I’m really proud of the girls, they played very well in tough conditions,” said head coach Krystal Kelly. “It was a quick turnaround since they came in on Friday and we left for Utah on Saturday.”

The busy schedule didn’t appear to faze the team too much as five players finished among the top 12 on the individual leaderboard.

Sophomore Annie Freman earned her 10th top-10 finish in 12 career events by placing in a tie for sixth with a pair of golfers, three shots behind medalist Camille Orito of New Mexico State. Freman was tied for the lead after the opening round with a 1-under 70 that included an eagle on the par-5, 470-yard 18th hole. But her second round 76 left her one shot out of a top-5 finish.

“Annie played well and was excited about going for the par 5’s in two (shots), which I normally don’t let her do,” Kelly noted. Freman finished as the tournament's top par-5 scorer averaging 4.38 strokes over the eight par-5 holes.

Playing in her first collegiate tournament, freshman Isabella Salant scored rounds of 75 and 73 to place 10th at 6-over 148. “Isabella played great,” said Kelly. “She played in the 2 spot today and was playing even better than the previous day. Her ball striking was very solid.”

Junior Monique Riley had the second-best finish of her career taking 11th place with a 7-over 149 (75, 74) while junior Ashley Noda and freshman Kristin Le tied for 12th at 8-over 150. Le, playing as an individual in her first collegiate tournament, posted a first round 1-under 70 to seize a share of the lead, but a second round 80 dropped her down the leaderboard.

Junior Meghan Shain carded a team-high 25 pars, the third-most among the 73 players, and rebounded from a first round 80 to post a 2-over 73 in the second round. She tied for 27th at 153 (+11).

The Broncos return to tournament play at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate beginning September 27 in Palm Desert, Calif.
