Huerta Nabs WCC Player of the Week After Hat Trick

EYEBRONCO Interview with Sofia!

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming off the third hat trick of her career, Sofia Huerta of No. 16 women's soccer was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday, the second time in her career she has received the honor. Huerta helped the Broncos come back from a 3-1 deficit vs. Fresno State. She now has six goals on the young season, tied for third most in the country and tops in the WCC.

"I'm really excited because it's always a great accomplishment to get Player of the Week," said Huerta. "It should be co-players of the week because my teammates set me up beautifully. It was a big game for us because coming back from down three goals is a tough thing to do."

"I'm very happy for Sofia,'" said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "A hat trick is not that common and she scored three great goals for us yesterday. As it turns out we needed all three of those, plus another one. I thought she played very well all game and was definitely the difference in the game."

Huerta finished the Broncos two games last weekend with three goals and 14 shots with seven on goal. Against Fresno State she scored three goals and attempted 12 shots with six on goal.

Santa Clara finishes its home stand on Fri., Sept. 12 vs. Dayton at 7 p.m. before playing the first road game of the year at Cal on Sun., Sept. 14 at 3:30 p.m.
