SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In the final road game of the regular season, Santa Clara women's soccer beat San Diego by a final of 3-1. The win puts the Broncos at 11-6-0 overall and 4-2-0 in WCC play while the Toreros are 7-7-2 and 3-3-0 in conference action.
Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. vs. Gonzaga.
Santa Clara outshot San Diego 9-6 and shots on goal were 8-3 in favor of the Broncos. Sofia Huerta led the way for the Bronco offense with two goals and six out of seven shots on goal. Kellie Peay also scored for Santa Clara while Brittany Ambrose and Kat McAuliffe had an assist each. Andi Tostanoski picked up two saves in net.
The Broncos jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the first goal of Peay's collegiate career in the 12th minute. B. Ambrose took a shot that was saved but on the rebound Peay was able to find the back of the net.
Less than 30 seconds later Huerta scored her first of the match to make it 2-0 Santa Clara. McAuliffe assisted on the goal.
Santa Clara and San Diego both had four shots and shots on goal were 4-2 in favor of the Broncos in the first half. Huerta and Peay led the way for the Bronco offense with a goal each while B. Ambrose and McAuliffe each had an assist. Tostanoski picked up two saves in net.
In the 77th minute Huerta scored her second of the match on a break away. She ran down the left side of the field and was able to beat the keeper to make the score 3-0 in favor of Santa Clara.
Mariah Butera got the Toreros a goal closer in the 79th minute. Julia Sherwood had the assist on Butera's one-timer off of a rebound.
