Julie Vass Still Going Strong in the Offseason

Written by Genre McAtee '16

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Although this year's soccer season has come to an end, Julie Vass (JV) is still active in her role as a Bronco athlete. Much of her time in the offseason is spent working hard to improve her individual skills as a player. Vass talked to Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) about her experience on the Mission campus and how she has grown during her time here.

SCB: Being born in England, what brought you to the US and ultimately to Santa Clara?

JV: I actually lived in England for only the first six years of my life. My father then accepted a job in Munich, and so I spent the next 12 years in Germany. My dad was then offered a new role based in the Bay Area, and we have been enjoying California for the last four years. Some of my dad's colleagues actually are Santa Clara alumni and they highly recommended the school. After visiting the college, I immediately knew that I wanted to join the SCU community.

SCB: What are a few your favorite things about attending school and playing soccer on the Mission campus?

JV: The SCU soccer program is excellent and has an amazing tradition. We have the opportunity to learn from a highly experienced coaching staff and of course spending time with Brandi Chastain is always inspiring. The SCU academic program is equally strong and we receive a well-rounded education, which prepares us well for our future work and personal lives. Finally, I love the backing we receive from the student community. Having the vocal support from friends, classmates and other teams during key games of the season really gives us an advantage!

SCB: How has soccer enriched your experience as a Bronco?

JV: Soccer training is a large time commitment and has forced me to be very organized and disciplined in my studies. As a result, I feel better prepared for life in the workplace after my graduation. I have also made several friends for life within the very close-knit soccer team. For example, I call Kat Uhl my little sister and Emily Johnson is actually my roommate. The coaches are incredible and we all know that we can approach them if we need help.

SCB: What is your favorite time of day to go outside and practice?

JV: I enjoy training during the late afternoon/early evening, as by then my studies for the day are complete and I can fully concentrate on practice. With the sun starting to set, it is usually just the perfect temperature for an 11 vs. 11 match-up!

SCB: How do you continue your involvement in your sport's offseason?

JV: During winter and spring quarter, we continue to work on the field as well as in the weight room. These two quarters give us time to improve and work on our individual goals and skills. I definitely look forward to having spring games soon as we will then be able to put what we've learned into practice.
