Chatting with Women's Soccer's Hailai Arghandiwal

By Jefferson Reese '15

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- Freshman Hailai Arghandiwal (HA) finished her first season on the women's soccer team in the fall. Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) caught up with Arghandiwal to find out more about her first year at Santa Clara University.

SCB:  Why did you choose Santa Clara University?

HA: I chose SCU because of its prestigious soccer program and its quality academics. Santa Clara was the perfect fit for me to pursue my athletic goals while receiving a top education. My family is a big part of my life and having them not too far is just another reason why I chose SCU.

SCB: How do you feel about your freshman season?

HA: I feel that my freshman season went well. I was fortunate enough to receive playing time as a freshman, but more importantly I was able to learn so much more about the game itself from my coaches and teammates. It was definitely a season of growth. With all the injuries and other adversities that our team had to face, we were able to work our way to second place in our conference with 14 wins. It was heart breaking not being apart of the NCAA tournament, but as a team we now know what we need to do to solidify our spot in the tournament for next season.

SCB: What are you doing in the offseason to prepare for the fall?

HA: My teammates and I have been working hard five days a week. We lift, condition and practice. All of us are committed to becoming better soccer players and overall athletes. I am focused and my teammates are focused. We want to push ourselves in all aspects.

SCB: What are your personal goals for next season on the field?

HA: I hope to have a greater impact on the field for my team. I want to help my team achieve our goals of winning our conference and eventually winning a national championship. I hope to continue to learn and grow as both a student of the game and as person.

SCB: What are your personal goals off of the field?

HA: I hope to become part of the Leavey School of Business and begin to pursue marketing. I want to make sure that I get the most out of my experience here at Santa Clara from academics to athletics.

SCB: How does playing close to home impact your performance?

HA: It is really nice to have my family and friends come out to my games. I try to perform to the best of my ability all the time, but there is a different feeling when you know your loved ones are there to watch you do what you love. I am blessed to have my family as one of my biggest support systems.
