High-Scoring First Half Drops Women's Soccer at No. 19 BYU

PROVO, Utah – In a wild game, Santa Clara women's soccer fell to No. 19 BYU by a final of 5-2. In eight previous games against BYU, Santa Clara had surrendered just three total goals. The loss puts the Broncos at 10-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in WCC play while the Cougars are 11-3-2 and 5-0-0 in conference action and have a 10-game winning streak.

Santa Clara returns to the field Sun., Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. at San Diego.

Santa Clara was outshot by BYU 19-5 and shots on goal were 8-4 in favor of the Cougars. Brittany Ambrose and Mariana Galvan led the way for the Bronco offense with a goal each while Sofia Huerta had an assist. Andi Tostanoski picked up three saves in net.

BYU jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the third minute off of a corner kick. The corner was deflected inside the box to Ashley Hatch who took a touch and put a shot in the right side of the goal that Tostanoski had no chance on.

Less than one minute later the Broncos answered back with a nice goal of their own. Huerta took a ball down the right side and centered it to the box to Galvan who kneed the shot in to make the score 1-1.

Michelle Murphy put the Cougars back up in the 23rd minute. She ran down the left side of the field to get one-on-one with the keeper. She used an extra touch to get past Tostanoski and hit the right side of the net off of a terrible angle to make it a 2-1 game.

Again Santa Clara answered quickly, this time off the foot of B. Ambrose in the 26th minute. B. Ambrose took a free kick from outside the 18-yard box on the right side of the field. She bent a ball perfectly into the far side of the net and off the post that was over the goalkeeper to knot the score at two goals apiece.

Hatch scored her second goal of the game in the just the 29th minute after she took on four Bronco defenders to make it 3-2. She ran down the left side of the field and past three defenders before putting a shot into the far side of the net.

Santa Clara was outshot by BYU 11-3 and shots on goal were 4-2 in favor of the Cougars in the first half. B. Ambrose and Galvan led the way for the Bronco offense with a goal each while Huerta had an assist. Tostanoski picked up one save in net.

The scoring continued right out of the chute in the second half when Murphy scored her second of the game. Nikki Fernandes ran down the right side of the field and sent a low pass across the center of the goal. Murphy was able to finish off the left post to make it 4-2.

Nadia Gomes added a goal in the 88th minute and BYU left the field with the 5-2 win.
