MALIBU, Calif. – Opening West Coast Conference play, Santa Clara women's soccer fell to No. 11 Pepperdine by a final of 2-1. The loss puts the Broncos at 7-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in WCC play while the Waves are 10-1-1 and 1-0-0 in conference action.
Santa Clara returns to the field Sun., Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at LMU.
Santa Clara was outshot by Pepperdine 18-12 and shots on goal were 7-5 in favor of the Broncos. Brittany Ambrose led the way for the Bronco offense with the goal while Katie Speidel had the assist. Andi Tostanoski picked up three saves in net.
Bri Visalli and Lynn Williams scored for Pepperdine while Visalli also added an assist. Hannah Seabert had six saves for the Waves.
The Broncos scored first on the fourth goal of the year from Ambrose in the 34th minute. Speidel set the table for Ambrose with a pass from the right side of the field to the six-yard box. Santa Clara took the 1-0 lead into the half.
Santa Clara was outshot by Pepperdine 8-4 and shots on goal were 3-1 in favor of the Broncos in the first half. Ambrose led the way for the Bronco offense with a goal while Speidel had an assist. Tostanoski picked up one saves in net.
Pepperdine tied the score in the 75th minute on the first of the season from Bri Visalli. She settled a deflection and fired a shot from the top of the box that beat Tostanoski.
Lynn Williams put the Waves on top five minutes later in the 80th minute. Visalli played a ball to Williams who went on a run through the middle of the box to put the Waves up 2-1.
