LONG BEACH, Calif. – In the final non-conference game of the regular season, Santa Clara women's soccer beat Long Beach State by a final of 2-1. The win puts the Broncos at 7-4 on the season while the 49ers are 4-4-3.
Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., Oct. 3 at 3 p.m. at Pepperdine in the start of West Coast Conference play.
Santa Clara outshot Long Beach State 10-8 and shots on goal were 8-6 in favor of the Broncos. Sofia Huerta and Brittany Ambrose led the way for the Bronco offense while Katie Speidel and Mariana Galvan each had an assist. Andi Tostanoski picked up five saves in net.
Long Beach State took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute off the foot of Ashley Gonzales. Val Margerum passed to Gonzales who was on the left side of the box and finished to the far post. The teams would head to the locker rooms with the Broncos down a goal.
Santa Clara was outshot by Long Beach State 5-4 and shots on goal were 4-2 in favor of the 49ers in the first half. Huerta and Jordan Jesolva led the way for the Bronco offense with a shot on goal each. Tostanoski picked up three saves in net.
Huerta knotted the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute off an assist from Galvan. Galvan sent a through pass to Huerta on the left side of the box who finished to the far post for her ninth goal of the year.
In the 90th minute Ambrose scored her second game-winner of the year. Speidel passed to Ambrose who one-touched a shot form eight yards out to the far post to put Santa Clara up 2-1 and give the Broncos the win.
