Johnston Starts in Second Straight Game for Women’s National Team

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Former Santa Clara women's soccer player Julie Johnston started and played in another full 90 minute victory for the United States at the Algarve Cup. The Americans shutout the Swiss 3-0 in the second game of Group B play.

This was Johnston's second straight start with the United States squad and seventh career cap. Wearing No. 26, the former Santa Clara Bronco helped facilitate the defensive line playing at the center back position.

The Americans will return to the pitch on Monday for the final game of Group B action when they take on Iceland at 10:30 a.m. PST.

In today's match, the American squad opened up a 0-0 draw after the first 45 minutes by scoring three goals in the second half. Alex Morgan put the United States on the board in the 54th minute by putting home a volley off a Lauren Holiday free kick. Eighteen minutes later, Amy Rodriguez increased the Americans' lead with a close range finish. Abby Wambach rounded out the scoring in the 81st minute with a chipped shot that found its way to the back of the net.
