SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – In its lone game of the week, Santa Clara women's soccer beat San Francisco by a final of 1-0 in double overtime. The win puts the Broncos at 9-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in WCC play while the Dons are 5-7-2 and 1-2-0 in conference action.
Santa Clara returns to the field Sun., Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. vs. Pacific in the first game of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader.
Santa Clara outshot San Francisco 13-7 and shots on goal were 8-4 in favor of the Broncos. Brittany Ambrose led the way for the Bronco offense with the double overtime goal while Katie Speidel had the assist. Andi Tostanoski picked up four saves in net.
Ambrose had the first shot on goal in the 12th minute but Madalyn Shiffel was able to make the save. Sofia Huerta added her first shot on goal in the 20th minute but again Shiffel made the stop.
The Broncos had two shots on goal in the span of just over a minute from Kellie Peay and Huerta but the Dons goalkeeper saved both shots to keep the game scoreless.
Santa Clara outshot San Francisco 8-4 and shots on goal were 4-2 in favor of the Broncos in the first half. Huerta led the way for the Bronco offense with three shots and two on goal while Ambrose attempted two shots and one on goal. Tostanoski picked up two saves saves in net.
In the 74th minute Huerta put a nice move on some San Francisco defenders to get into the box. Her shot was saved but the Broncos got a corner kick out of the chance. Off the corner, Megan Crosson had a header shot but again it was saved.
In the 108th minute Santa Clara finally found the back of the net to come away with the win. Huerta played a nice ball to Speidel into the right side of the box. Speidel passed to Ambrose across the front of the goal and Ambrose finished the chance to end the game.
