Volleyball Freshman Sangiacomo Named West Coast Conference Player of the Week

WCC Release

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Santa Clara volleyball's Julia Sangiacomo is the first West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the 2019 season, the WCC announced Monday. The freshman outside hitter turned in a strong debut as the Broncos went 4-0 and won the Indiana Invitational.

Sangiacomo averaged 54 kills (4.15/set) on .341 hitting to go along with 25 digs, nine aces, two block solos and 66.5 points en route to all-tournament team honors. SCU was one of only two WCC teams to finish opening weekend undefeated.

In her first collegiate match, Sangiacomo notched 12 kills on .391 hitting in a sweep of Florida International, including set-clinching kills in the first and second frames. Later that day, the Napa, California native racked up 13 kills on .407 hitting to help the Broncos erase a two-set deficit and defeat UT Martin. She had the set-clinching kill in the third and sealed the match with an ace in the fifth.

On day two of the tournament, Sangiacomo got off to a quick start against Marshall, posting nine of her match-high 18 kills in the first set. She had the final three Bronco kills of the first set and served up five aces in the victory. Facing Indiana with the tournament title on the line, Sangiacomo totaled 11 kills as SCU finished the invitational by sweeping the host Hoosiers.

The Broncos next take the court on Thursday against CSUN at the Fresno State Invitational. They square off against Cal State Bakersfield and the tournament host Bulldogs on Friday.
