HIGHLIGHTS: Volleyball with the 6-0 Run Against Pepperdine
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite a solid offensive outing, Santa Clara volleyball was unable to string together enough plays to finish off a set in its second meeting of the season with Pepperdine.
Shannon Scully had 17 kills on an impressive .484 attack percentage and Hannah Frohling tallied 11 kills, to go along with a strong service game that led the Waves to a 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 victory over the Broncos in Thursday's West Coast Conference matchup.
Julia Sangiacomo posted 12 kills and Kathryn Decker had 11 for Santa Clara, which was only slightly outhit (.324 to .317) by Pepperdine.
The Broncos (18-11, 8-8 WCC) led 14-9 in the third before the Waves (17-10, 13-3) reeled off the next six points with Hana Lishman on serve. A kill from Decker evened the score at 18-all, but Pepperdine's Tarah Wylie responded with a kill and one of her four service aces. Santa Clara crept within a point five more times, but was unable to even the count. Scully and Frohling had kills and Wylie finished it off with a pair of her own to send the Waves to their sixth-straight win.
In the second set, which was tied nine times, Santa Clara outhit Pepperdine .366 to .279 but had five service errors. Decker tied the tally at 23-all on a kill, but Frohling had a kill and an attack error ended it.
The opening set was one of runs as Pepperdine scored the opening six points before Santa Clara responded with a 6-0 stretch to take 11-10 lead. Later in the stanza, the Waves scored five in a row with Frohling on serve to take a 22-16 lead. The Broncos pulled within 22-19 on an ace from Odom and an attack error from the Waves, but Scully matched that with two straight kills.
Michelle Shaffer posted 32 assists and 13 digs for the Broncos, and Taylor Odom had six kills and five of the team's 14 blocks.
Isabel Zelaya had 38 assists and 17 of Pepperdine's 49 digs.
