Volleyball Takes Down San Francisco in Four Sets

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Julia Sangiacomo's 13 kills led a trio of Santa Clara volleyball players with double-digit kills to help the Broncos to a four-set victory over San Francisco in a West Coast Conference match on Friday at the Leavey Center. The Broncos defeated the Dons 22-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-8 to pick up their second straight conference win.

Sangiacomo nearly had a triple-double with nine digs and a career-high eight blocks, bettering her previous high of three. Allison Kantor and Taylor Odom each had 12 kills for the Broncos.

Fast set starts was the theme of the night as Santa Clara (12-5, 2-2 WCC) jumped off to quick starts in all four frames.  In each stanza, the Broncos had at least a four-point advantage within the first 10 points.

The Broncos got off to a 6-2 lead in the opening set but San Francisco (4-11, 0-4 WCC) took the set 25-22 on .342 hitting with McKenna Marshall leading the way with six kills. With the score tied at 16-all, the Dons closed out the set on a 9-6 spurt; six of those points were the result of Bronco errors.

In the second set, Sangiacomo had four kills including one on set point as the Broncos led from start to finish, helped by 11 Dons errors. Ahead 4-3, Santa Clara used a 12-3 run with and went on to take the set 25-14.

Santa Clara carried the momentum in to the third set, again leading from start to finish to win 25-23. Sangiacomo and Odom each had three kills in the set.

In the fourth and deciding set, the Broncos built an 11-1 lead before cruising to a 25-8 win to clinch the match.  The 17-point margin was the biggest scoring differential in a 25-point set this season. SCU had a 25-9 set against UT Martin at the Indiana Invitational on Aug. 30.

Marshall finished with eight kills in the match to tie for the Don team lead alongside Kathya Garcia and Kate Ashman. Ally Wada and Anna Dalla Vecchia had double-digit digs with 12 and 11, respectively, while Gretchen Reinert led all players with 14 digs for the Broncos.
