Volleyball Claims First Win of the Season

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara volleyball was ahead by two sets for the second-straight day against Pacific, but Wednesday's West Coast Conference match ended with a victory, its first of the season.

Julia Sangiacomo posted 13 kills on a .344 attack percentage and Sophia Tulino tallied 11 kills on an even more efficient .357 attack percentage to lead the Broncos to a 25-23, 25-15, 29-27 win over the pesky Tigers.

Riley Patterson had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, and Kaelyn Saler also had 10 kills on a stellar .529 attack percentage for Pacific.

Santa Clara hit .220, tallied 12 service aces, including three each by Nani Spaar and Gretchen Reinert, and forced 20 attack errors against the Tigers (2-6, 2-6) who rallied from a 2-0 deficit at home on Tuesday against the Broncos (1-3, 1-3) to claim victory.

Pacific nearly sent the return match to a fourth set, but the Broncos staved off two set points by the Tigers before the script was flipped. Santa Clara was turned aside twice to the end the match before finishing it off on an attack error with Reinert on serve.

Sangiacomo's kill gave the Broncos a 19-17 and for the remainder of the set neither team led by more than one.

The opening set was also closely contested. Pacific fought back after trailing 19-15 and forged ahead 23-22 on a kill by Sedona Sherman, but Sangiacomo countered with a pair of kills and the Broncos took the set on an attack error.

In set two, the Broncos built a 20-15 lead and then finished it off with five straight points, three courtesy of attack errors.
