Volleyball Starts Home-and-Home against San Francisco with Senior Night Thursday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara volleyball is back in the Bay Area for a home-and-home set against San Francisco. The Broncos host the Dons on Thursday before heading to The Hilltop on Friday. Both matches are set to start at 6 p.m.

Santa Clara will honor senior Gretchen Reinert in a postmatch ceremony on Thursday.

The Broncos (4-8, 4-8 WCC) played four matches in five days last week, splitting contests in a home-and-home matchup against Saint Mary's before dropping a pair of road tilts at LMU. The Gaels won in four sets in Moraga on Thursday and the Broncos returned home for a four-set win on Friday. The Lions topped the Broncos in three sets on both Sunday and Monday.

Due to current guidelines in California, spectators are not permitted inside Leavey Center. In addition, only essential personnel is allowed on campus. The general public is allowed only to 'pass through' campus, such as on a walk, but no lingering, gathering, lounging, etc. is permitted.

THE BRONCOS

• This Season (Spring 2021): 4-8 (4-8 WCC, 3-3 Home, 1-5 Away) | Last Season (2019): 21-12 (10-8 WCC), NIVC Second Round

Entering Thursday, Reinert has played in 87 matches as a Bronco and taken the court for all 170 sets over the last two seasons. She has recorded 10 or more digs in 18 straight matches and reached the 20-dig mark eight times in her career. The libero led Santa Clara with 452 digs in 2019 to help the team win 21 matches and reach the postseason for the first time since 2015. Reinert had 20 digs in Santa Clara's NIVC win at Long Beach State, the team's first postseason victory since 2008.

Julia Sangiacomo has recorded 10 or more kills in 14 straight matches dating back to the 2019 season. She posted 36 kills in eight sets (4.5/set) in Santa Clara's meetings with Saint Mary's, then added 10 kills on Sunday and 13 more on Monday at LMU. Sangiacomo's career-high 27 kills on March 8 against Portland were the most by a Bronco since Nov. 1, 2012, when Megan Anders registered 28 kills in a five-set victory at San Francisco. Sangiacomo ranks second in the WCC with 4.2 kills/set and 4.77 points/set.

Sophia Tulino has at least 11 kills in 11 of 12 matches this season. She ranks seventh in the WCC with 4.18 points/set and ninth with 3.57 kills/set. The freshman outside hitter also leads the WCC with 0.43 aces/set and has posted multiple aces five times, including four aces in each of Santa Clara's first two matches against then-No. 18 San Diego. As a team, Santa Clara leads the WCC with 1.87 aces/set (20th NCAA).

Liliana Light had a season-high 49 assists in the Friday win over Saint Mary's. That figure marked her second-highest assist total in a single match as a Bronco in her 60th match with the team. Light's career-high 52 assists came in her third match at SCU as a freshman, a five-setter against Grand Canyon on Aug. 25, 2018.

Elena Radeff made her first collegiate start and hit .364 with five kills and three blocks in Santa Clara's win over the Gaels. Radeff had played in only one set in the team's first nine matches.

Michelle Shaffer posted a 32 assist, 12-dig, 11-kill triple-double in a five-set win at Gonzaga on March 12. Shaffer has two career triple-doubles and is tied for Santa Clara's all-time lead in that category, alongside Stacey MacDonough (1985-88), Jennifer Guigliano (1990-93) and Becky Potter (2000-03). Shaffer is one of only two Broncos all-time to record a triple-double with kills, assists and digs. She and Kathryn Decker achieved that feat last season.

The Dons split a two-match set at home against Gonzaga last week, dropping Friday's opener in three sets before taking a four-set win on Saturday. They are hitting .183 as a team and allowing a .215 hitting percentage.

McKenna Marshall had 11 kills on Friday and 20 kills on Saturday; the latter marked her sixth match on the season with 20 or more kills. She leads the WCC with 255 kills.
