Volleyball Drops Road Contest at LMU

LOS ANGELES — Santa Clara volleyball dropped the first of a two-match road swing at LMU on Sunday. The Lions topped the Broncos 25-11, 25-14, 25-18 in a West Coast Conference matchup at Gersten Pavilion. 

The teams meet up again on Monday at 3 p.m. 

Isabella Bareford produced 31 assists and set LMU to a .414 hitting percentage, the third-best mark by a WCC squad this season. Rose Booth hit .407 with a match-high 12 kills. Kari Geissberger (10 kills on .345 hitting), Audrey Klemp (10 kills on .474 hitting) and Sierra Bartley (eight kills on .800 hitting) also produced big offensive days for the Lions (6-9, 6-9 WCC).

Emmelyn Walters led LMU with 6.0 blocks and the Lions won the team block battle eight to one.

Julia Sangiacomo led the Broncos (4-7, 4-7) with 10 kills and Sophia Tulino added seven as the team hit .149. Gretchen Reinert had a match-high 14 digs.

Sangiacomo had five kills in a 13-point stretch late in the third set to continue her streak of double-digit kills in all 11 matches this season.

After Santa Clara won the first two points of the day, the Lions won the next six points and 10 of the next 12 overall to take a 10-4 lead. Klemp produced a kill and two aces for the last four points of that stretch and LMU led by at least five on its way to taking the opening set. The Lions hit .429 for the frame and used five blocks to hold the Broncos to -.038 hitting.

LMU found another offensive gear in the second set, hitting .529 on 34 error-free swings. Booth produced two of her five kills for the set during a 4-0 run to give the Lions a 12-7 advantage. LMU held at least a four-point edge the rest of the way and closed the set on a 9-2 run.

The third set was tied as late as 15-all before Geissberger had a kill and Ella Bohele notched back-to-back aces to put the Lions up by three. Booth had the final three kills of the afternoon for the Lions, who finished the day with a 7-2 spree.
