Volleyball Drops Match at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — Santa Clara volleyball wrapped up a home-and-home set against San Francisco with a Friday defeat on the Hilltop. The Dons topped the Broncos 25-18, 25-12, 25-22 in a West Coast Conference matchup at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. 

Each team won in sweep fashion on its home court in the Bay Area matchup. Santa Clara scored a three-set victory in Leavey Center on Thursday. 

McKenna Marshall had a match-high 12 kills on .281 hitting and added 12 digs for the Dons (8-10, 8-10 WCC) on Friday. Greta Corti recorded 10 kills and Valeria Alegrias Cambindo hit .421 with nine kills for San Francisco in the team's 2021 Spring finale. Aylen Ayub led all players with 30 assists and Anna Dalla Vecchia posted a match-best 15 digs on her Senior Night. San Francisco outhit Santa Clara .296 to .075 for the contest. 

Michelle Shaffer registered nine kills to lead the Broncos (5-9, 5-9). Julia Sangiacomo had seven kills and a team-best 11 digs. 

The Dons took control of a back-and-forth first set by using a 5-0 run for a 16-10 lead. Corti had a kill and combined with Orsula Staka for a block in the last two points of that stretch. San Francisco led by no fewer than five points for the rest of the opening frame. 

Five different Dons produced a kill to help the team jump out to an 8-2 lead in the second set. San Francisco had kills on its first four swings and hit .387 for the stanza, which it closed out by winning eight of the last nine points.

The third set was the closest of the tilt as neither side led by more than three at any point. Santa Clara was ahead 16-15 before the Dons rattled off four points in a row, including back-to-back kills by Corti, to take a 19-16 lead. The Broncos pulled back within a point three times after that run, as late as 23-22, before the Dons came out of a timeout with a kill from Marshall and a match-sealing ace from Hannah Kinnison.

NEXT UP

Santa Clara begins its final week of competition in the Spring 2021 season with road matches at BYU next Tuesday and Wednesday. Both contests get started at noon PDT. The Broncos return to Leavey Center to face Pepperdine on Friday and Saturday.
