Box Score

MADISON, Wis. - Freshman Mykell Bates scored the game-winning goal Sunday afternoon to give the No. 12 Santa Clara men's soccer to its first win of the season. The Broncos defeated UW-Milwaukee, 2-1, in their final match of the Middleton Sports & Fitness Invitational in Madison, Wis.

The match was tied 1-1 and seemed set to head into extra minutes, but Bates goal at 88:48 and the Broncos defense in the final minute sealed the deal for Santa Clara. The Roseville, Calif., native received the ball about 30 yards out from a free kick by junior Jeff Cosgriff. With a diving header attempt, Bates sent the ball to the inside far post.

The Panthers tried to knot the score again at 89:21 but Evan Bartzis' shot was perfectly placed into the hands of Bronco keeper Kevin Klasila. Klasila played all 90 minutes in goal for the Broncos, registering two saves.

The first half was slow for both teams as the Broncos took seven shots to the Panthers' two. However, in the second half, Santa Clara out-shot Milwaukee 12-4. SCU also held a huge edge in corner kicks against Milwaukee, 11-1.

Senior Brian Martin got the scoring started for the Broncos in the 19th minute. Santa Clara sent a ball up the field and it was played into the right side of the box. Panthers' keeper Grant Fernstrum came off his line to make a play on it, but was called for a foul on his diving attempt at collecting the loose ball. Martin scored his second goal of the season as he netted the PK for the 1-0 lead.

Martin tried again to give Santa Clara a 2-0 advantage just 25 seconds later, but he shot went wide.

Returning in the second half, the Broncos continued to pepper the Panthers' defense. In the 66th minute, Milwaukee took control of the ball. A header at 67:47 by Eric Frazier was blocked by the SCU defense, but 30 seconds later Frazier connected with Bartzis to even the score, 1-1. Bartzis received the ball off a throw-in from the near sideline and headed it in at 68:18.

The game was held scoreless for 20 minutes, but Santa Clara attempted to complete six more opportunities to take the lead before Bates' goal.

The Broncos, who took second place in the tournament, had three players named to the all-tournament team. Cosgriff, Bates and sophomore Jalil Anibaba earned the honor this weekend. Anibaba was also named the tournament's Defensive MVP.
