Men's Soccer Travels To UCLA Saturday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team travels south this weekend to take on UCLA in non-conference action. The Broncos and Bruins faceoff at 7 p.m. at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.

Last Time Out
The Broncos battled the then-No. 4 Golden Bears of California to a 1-1 time Friday night in their 2008 home opener. The match was held scoreless until the final minute as freshman Connor Mitchell scored with 49 seconds remaining. However, after a handball was called on the Broncos, Cal took a PK to knot the score 1-1. The Broncos had a solid chance to take the lead in the first overtime but Brian Brungger's shot was punch out of the way by Cal keeper Stefan Frei.

Bronco Watch
Jeff Cosgriff continues to lead the Broncos in points with six (2G, 2A). He notched assist No. 2 on Mitchell's goal against Cal. Senior Brian Martin has also netted two goals and has four points thus far. In goal, Kevin Klasila has a 1.20 goals-against average and has collected eight saves.

Freshmen Frenzy
A quartet of rookie talent has helped create key plays for the Broncos both offensively and defensively this season. Mykell Bates and Mitchell have both scored their first collegiate goals, while Brungger and Brandon Zimmerman earned their first career assists during the opening weekend.

In the WCC
As a team, the Broncos rank fourth in West Coast Conference with a 1-3-1 overall record. SCU is third in shots, points, goals and assists, while 10 different players are ranked individually. Cosgriff leads the group as he is tied for first in assists and second in the conference in points and goals.

Scouting UCLA
The Bruins enter Saturday's contest with a 1-3-1 overall record and a 1-2-0 home mark. UCLA is led by Maxwell Griffin, who leads with team in goals scored (2), assists (2) and points (6). In goal, Trevor Hunter has made one start this season and has a 0.82 GAA. Brian Perk has started in four contests, has made 11 saves and has a 1.96 GAA. In their most recently outing, the Bruins fell 3-0 to then-No. 19 Indiana at Drake Stadium.

Last Time Out vs. UCLA
The Broncos and Bruins met twice in 2007. The first time around, on Sept. 22, SCU defeated UCLA, 2-1, in overtime. The two teams met again in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Buck Shaw Stadium with the Broncos posting a 3-1 victory.

All-Time vs. UCLA
Saturday marks the 29th meeting in the all-time series, with UCLA leads 15-9-4.

On Deck
SCU returns home to host San Jose State on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium.
