SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Connor Mitchell found the back of the net in the 95th minute Saturday night to give the Santa Clara men's soccer team a 1-0 triumph over Bay Area rival Stanford. The goal was Mitchell's second of the season.
Mitchell's golden goal was on a 10-year cross-goal shot from the right side of the penalty area. Helping set up the play were freshman Brandon Zimmerman and sophomore Jalil Anibaba.
With the win the Broncos improved to 2-4-2 on the season, while the Cardinal dropped to 2-4-1. Stanford seemed to hold the majority of possession over the 100 minutes of the contest as the Cardinal out-shot the Broncos 18-12. In the second half alone, Stanford attempted 11 shots to Santa Clara's three. Sophomore Jeremy Del Re earned his first collegiate win, making four saves on the night.
SCU will take to the road for three straight contests to open the 2008 WCC schedule. In their next contest, the Broncos battle the Pilots of Portland on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in Portland, Ore. Santa Clara then takes on Gonzaga on Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. in Spokane, Wash.
