Box Score

LOS ANGELES - The Santa Clara men's soccer team lost 3-0 in an intense game against Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference action Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles.

The Broncos attack was led by freshmen reserves Alex Fitschen and Eric Masch with two shots on goal each. Fitschen first tried to put Santa Clara on the board at 34:17 but his shot was saved by LMU keeper Jack McCormack. It was Santa Clara's lone shot of the half. Ten minutes after the Lions' second goal, Fitschen attempted once again to make it a one goal game but keeper Patrick Sampson made the save. In the 63rd minutes, Masch began his attack on goal. His first shot went high, his second attempt was stopped by Sampson and his third shot, in the 90th minute was also saved by Sampson.

Santa Clara's best chance of the game was a free kick in the 68th minute by freshman Brandon Zimmerman from just outside the box that went barely high of the crossbar. SCU outshot LMU 9-5 in the second half.

However, it was LMU's offense that was able to penetrate and reach the back of the net. The Lions scored in the final minute of the first half to take the 1-0 lead. Sharif Khatib took a shot off a header from Jawaan Delaney that was flicked off a cross shot into the box by Stephen Carlson. Then, just under a minute into the second half LMU made it a 2-0 contest as Delaney found the back of the net off a cross from Greg Ricks. Carlson also earned an assist on the play. At 87:00, the Lions scored their final point of the game. It was Brad Stisser's third goal of the season off a set up by Artur Jozkowicz. He crossed the ball to the box where Stisser pounded a volley high into the net.

With the win, LMU improves to 6-8-5 on the season and 4-6-1 in WCC action, while SCU fell to 4-9-6 overall and 2-5-4 in league play.

The Broncos bring the 2008 regular season to a close Sunday afternoon against the Toreros of San Diego. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Torero Stadium.
