Men's Soccer Hosts Gonzaga And Portland

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team returns to Buck Shaw Stadium to host its final three home contests of the season. The Broncos battled the Bulldogs of Gonzaga on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. and then face the Pilots of Portland on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out
The Broncos faced the Dons of San Francisco in two games this weekend and went 0-1-1. Santa Clara and USF battled to a 0-0 overtime finish on Friday at Buck Shaw Stadium and on Sunday fell, 3-1, in The City. Chris Sauter scored his first goal of the season in that contest.

Bronco Watch
Cosgriff reclaims sole possession of the top spot on the Bronco leader board this week. Cosgriff leads SCU with eight points and three goals. Right behind him are Connor Mitchell, Brian Martin and Kellen Wantulok with two goals each. In goal, Kevin Klasila is 2-5-4, has two shutouts under his belt and 31 saves to his credit.

Klasila And The Record Books
The Bronco keeper's career goals against average of 0.80 jumped him into the all-time record book this season. After the past weekend, Klasila ranks No. 6 on the all-time list.

In the WCC
This week SCU moved up in a couple of team rankings, while several players made their first appearances in the individual rankings. The Broncos are second in shots, fourth in points and tied for fourth in goals. Individually, Cosgriff is eighth in goals and 10th in points, while Mitchell and Zimmerman remain tied for fourth in assists. Klasila's GAA also ranks fourth in the league. In WCC games only, Santa Clara is tied for third in GAA and fourth in saves. Anibaba and Wantulok rank eighth and 10th, respectively in shots, while Wantulok is tied for seventh in goals. Mitchell leads in league games in assists and Klasila is third in GAA.

Scouting Gonzaga
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 5-7-2 overall record and a 2-4-1 WCC mark. Gonzaga is 0-3-1 in their last four outings and earned their last conference win against SCU on Oct. 5. Players to watch for the Zags are Tye Perdido (6G, 1A) and Ben Funkhouser (3G, 4A). In goal, Scott Barnum has a 1.35 GAA and 39 saves thus far.

Last Time Out vs. Gonzaga
Oct. 5, 2008 - The Bulldogs defeated the Broncos 2-1 in overtime in Spokane. Santa Clara held a 1-0 lead thanks to its defense and Wantulok, who scored in the 43rd minute. However, Gonzaga knotted the game in the 81st minute and earned the victory on a goal from Funkhouser in the 98th minute.

Friday marks the 21st meeting of the two teams in a series that Santa Clara leads 10-7-3.

Scouting Portland
The Pilots enter the weekend with a 6-7-2 overall record and a 3-4-0 WCC mark. Portland has won its last two conference games that include a shutout of Saint Mary's and a 2-1 edge over Gonzaga. Players to watch for the Pilots are: Frankie Lopez (9G, 2A); Collen Warner (3G, 6A) and Bryan Irwin (4G, 2A). In goal, Austin Guerrero has a 1.43 GAA and 67 saves thus far.

Last Time Out vs. Portland
Oct. 3, 2008 - Portland topped SCU, 4-1. Kellen Wantulok scored the lone goal for the Broncos in the 36th minute.

All-Time vs. Portland
Sunday's match marks the 34th meeting in a series that Santa Clara leads 16-11-6.

On Deck
Santa Clara celebrates its graduating seniors on Friday, Nov. 7 in its final home game of the season. The Broncos face the Gaels of Saint Mary's at 7 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Senior Night Ceremony will be held just prior to starting lineups.
