SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team finished the 2008 season with a 4-9-7 record and a 2-5-5 mark in the West Coast Conference. The Broncos had six student-athletes earn All-WCC honors and three received NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-West accolades.

Last Match
The Broncos rallied to a 1-1 overtime draw with the Toreros of San Diego to close out the 2008 season. The Broncos defense did a solid job of holding off the Toreros in the first half. Then in the 38th minute, Santa Clara took a 1-0 lead on Sean Danzeiser's goal. Freshman Eric Masch dribbled up the near side through several USD players. He centered the ball just before the out of bounds line to Danzeiser, whose shot went above keeper Kelin Briones to the upper right corner. Santa Clara held onto the lead going into half time. Forty-two minutes after Danzeiser's goal, Kyle Ochoa evened the score. At 79:28, Corey Norris sent a long pass to Ochoa, who collected the ball and fired a shot from about 18 yards out. The ball passed Bronco keeper Kevin Klasila for the tie.

Head Coach Cameron Rast
Cameron Rast (Santa Clara '92) completed his seventh season at the helm of the Santa Clara men's soccer program in 2008 and has a 87-38-24 (.664) overall record and a 42-19-11 (.660) mark in West Coast Conference matches. He has led the Broncos to the NCAA Tournament in five of his seven seasons and his 2003 team advanced to the NCAA College Cup, where it lost a double-overtime decision to eventual national champion Indiana. He has now led the team to three WCC titles after clinching the 2007 championship on Nov. 4, 2007. Rast has also won three WCC Coach of the Year awards (2003, 2006, 2007). After eight years as an assistant coach and four as a player, Rast has now reached the College Cup in three different capacities while at Santa Clara. He is already in the top-10 on the WCC career list for league wins. Rast is assisted by Eric Yamamoto, Rusty Johnson and Jeff Baicher.

Rast Moves Into Third
Rast is in third place all-time in wins at SCU with 87 wins. The all-time leader is Mitch Murray (1991-2001), who has 143 victories followed by Dave Chaplik with 92. Rast is the second-fastest coach in school history to reach the 50-win plateau, just behind Murray.

All-WCC Honorees
Six Santa Clara men's soccer student-athletes were selected for All-West Coast Conference honors this season. The group was led by first team honoree and senior captain Jide Ogunbiyi. It was his fourth honor from the league.

Junior and sophomore captains Stephen McCarthy and Jalil Anibaba earned second team honors, while freshman Zimmerman received All-Freshman team and honorable mention accolades. McCarthy was a second-team all-conference recipient in 2007 and Co-Freshman of the year in 2006. Anibaba was the 2007 WCC Freshman of the Year. Junior Cosgriff and sophomore Kellen Wantulok both earned their second accolade from the WCC as they were also named honorable mention.

Ogunbiyi Named All-Far West
Santa Clara defender Ogunbiyi received his second honor of the season as he was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) All-Far West third team. It is Ogunbiyi's second honor from the NSCAA.

Ogunbiyi was once again a fixture in the Broncos defense and started in 14 of the Broncos 20 contests. He ends his collegiate career with 30 career points on 11 goals and eight assists. The Gwynedd, Pa., native received his fourth West Coast Conference honor last month as he was named to the All-WCC first team. Last season, after helping the Broncos to a NCAA third round appearance and the WCC title, Ogunbiyi received NSCAA All-Far West Second Team honors.

Three Earn NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-West Region honors
Three Santa Clara men's soccer student-athletes were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for their achievements on and off the field. Senior Brian Martin and juniors Ross Smith and Cosgriff were named to the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-West Region team. It is a first-time honor for all three athletes.

Martin was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VIII team earlier this season. The Milwaukee, Wis. native owns a 3.90 cumulative grade-point-average as a Finance major. A three-year letterwinner for the Broncos, he started in 14 of 20 games, missing the final six due to a knee injury. He finished the season tied for second on the team with two goals. He scored his first goal of the season against then-No. 16 Illinois-Chicago and then converted a penalty kick against UW-Milwaukee to help the Broncos to a 2-1 win. He brought his career to a close with six goals, nine assists and 21 points.

Smith played a huge role in the Broncos defense this season. He saw action in 19 of the Broncos' 20 games, starting in 15. As an accounting major, he has compiled a 3.89 cumulative GPA. The Pleasanton, Calif. native scored his lone goal of the season and the second of his career against then-No. 16 UIC. He also dished out an assist on Stephen McCarthy's game-tying goal against San Jose State.

Cosgriff proved to be an offensive and defensive threat for Santa Clara this season and was one of just two Broncos to see action in all 20 contests. An All-West Coast Conference honorable mention, Cosgriff finished the season tied for first on the team in goals (3) and second on the team in points (8). His first goal of the year was against Loyola-Chicago (Aug. 20), his second goal came against then-No. 16 UIC (Sept. 1) and his final goal was the game-winner against San Diego (Oct. 19). Cosgriff also dished out two assists this season and was named WCC Player of the Week on Oct. 20. The San Bruno, Calif. native has a 3.50 cumulative GPA as an Economics major. He will enter his senior season in 2009 with nine goals, two assists and 20 points.

Klasila And The Record Books
The Bronco keeper's career goals against average of 0.84 jumped him into the all-time record book this season. At the end of the season, Klasila ranks No. 8 on the all-time list.

Godrej Earns First Win
Freshman keeper Naushad Godrej got his first career start against Portland (Nov. 2) and earned his first collegiate win as well. He collected two saves in the effort and is second on the team with a 1.83 GAA.

Assists Leaders
Mitchell and Zimmerman were key play makers for the Broncos this season. Each has dished out three assists. Zimmerman teamed with Martin for a goal against UIC and then helped out fellow freshman Mitchell against Stanford, while Mitchell has had a hand in Danzeiser and Cosgriff's goals this year.

Martin Earns Academic All-District Honors
Senior forward Martin has been a consistent offensive force for the Broncos this season and for his efforts on the field and in the classroom, he was named to ESPN the Magazine's Academic All-District VIII First Team. He is third on the team with 21 shots and tied for first with Anibaba and Wantulok with 10 shots on goal. He also has two goals on the season.

Cosgriff Named WCC Player of the Week
Junior midfielder Cosgriff picked up his first-ever WCC accolade on Monday as the league named him Player of the Week. Cosgriff's goal against San Diego not only gave Santa Clara its first conference win of the season, but handed the Toreros their first conference loss of the year. He is the second Bronco this season to earn the honor.

Mitchell Named WCC Player of the Week
After helping the Broncos to a 1-0-1 week, Mitchell was named the WCC's men's soccer Player of the Week. Mitchell's goal was scored in the 95th minute of Saturday's contest against Stanford. The golden goal was on a 10-yard cross-goal shot from the right side of the penalty area. Helping set up the play were freshman Zimmerman and sophomore Anibaba. Earlier in the week, Mitchell played a role in helping the Broncos to a 1-1 tie with the Spartans of San Jose State.

All-Tournament Honorees
The Broncos had three players earn all-tournament accolades at the Middleton Sports & Fitness Invite. Cosgriff and Mykell Bates were named to the team, while Anibaba earned Defensive MVP honors. Cosgriff notched the assist on Bates' goal, while Anibaba played a key role in SCU's defense that limited the Panthers to only to just six shots.

Cosgriff Connects
Junior Cosgriff matched his 2007 season goals tally in just the first weekend of the 2008 season. The midfielder from San Bruno netted his first goal of the year, the Broncos only of the day, against Loyola Chicago. He then put the Broncos on the board against the Flames of UIC for goal No. 2. His career count currently stands at eight goals.

McCarthy Named To M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Watch List
Santa Clara midfielder McCarthy compiled a big sophomore campaign in 2007 and his efforts were acknowledged in August as he was named to the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy watch list. by the NSCAA. McCarthy scored six goals for the Broncos in 2007, helping Santa Clara to its second straight West Coast conference title with an unbeaten 10-0-2 record. Three of his goals were game-winning performances, including lifting the Broncos to a 3-1 victory over UCLA in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. McCarthy earned All-WCC and All-Far West Region second team honors.

Anibaba Earns Preseason All-America Honors
Sophomore captain Anibaba was named to the 2008 Preseason All-American list by Soccer America, it was announced on Aug. 27. Anibaba, the 2007 WCC Freshman of the Year, started all 22 games and led team in minutes played with 2,035. Anibaba spent the majority of the season in central defense. The Broncos posted a 13-1-4 record when he would start at central defense. Anibaba scored the game-winning goal with two seconds left in regulation with an incredible side-volley against San Francisco on Oct. 12 and for his efforts was named to CSN's National Team of Week on Oct. 15.

Broncos Boast No. 9 Recruiting Class
College Soccer News named the 2008 Santa Clara recruiting class No. 9 in the nation. The class boasts midfielder Chance Bennett who was an NSCAA Youth All-American and a member of the Cal-North and Region IV ODP teams as well as Parade All-American defender Zimmerman. Midfielder Brian Bruggner and forward Alex Fitschen were member of the Cal-South and Region IV ODP teams, while forward Mitchell was a four-time All- State selection and also a member of the Region IV ODP team. On the club front, midfielder Murphy Campbell played for the Crossfire and defender Keith Cowdrey played for the highly regarded Casa Mia Bays. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Robert Kempf gained valuable experience at the Shattuck St. Mary's residency program.

Bennett, Fitschen Among 100 Top Freshmen To Watch
College Soccer News announced its Top 100 Freshmen to Watch last week and included on the list were rookies Bennett and Alex Fitschen. Bennett was an NSCAA Youth All-American, while both he and Fitschen was a member of the Region IV ODP team.
