SCU Men's Soccer Battles USF This Week

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team finishes its short home swing with a 7 p.m. match against the University of San Francisco on Friday, Oct. 24 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Dons and Broncos face off again later that weekend up in The City with a 7 p.m. start on Sunday, Oct. 26.

Last Time Out
The Broncos increased its unbeaten streak to three games this weekend with a 2-2 double overtime tie with the Lions of Loyola Marymount and a 1-0 victory over the Toreros of San Diego. Sean Danzeiser and Brandon Zimmerman scored for the first this season in the contest against LMU, while Jeff Cosgriff netted the game-winning goal against San Diego.

Bronco Watch
Cosgriff reclaims sole possession of the top spot on the Bronco leader board this week. Cosgriff leads SCU with eight points and three goals. Connor Mitchell and Zimmerman each dished out an assist this weekend on Danzeiser's goal to up their tally to three. In goal, Kevin Klasila picked up win No. 2 and now has 25 saves to his credit.

Cosgriff Named WCC Player of the Week
Junior midfielder Cosgriff picked up his first-ever WCC accolade on Monday as the league named him Player of the Week. Cosgriff's goal against San Diego not only gave Santa Clara its first conference win of the season, but handed the Toreros their first conference loss of the year. He is the second Bronco this season to earn the honor.

Assists Leaders
Mitchell and Zimmerman bumped out Cosgriff this week from the assists leaders category. Both players have three thus far and contributed to the set up of Danzeiser's goal Friday night. The pair has been integral in setting up several of the Broncos goals this season. Mitchell had a hand in each of Wantulok's goals last weekend. Zimmerman teamed with Martin for a goal against UIC and then helped out fellow freshman Mitchell against Stanford.

Martin Mayhem
Senior Brian Martin had a tremendous outing for the Broncos last weekend. In Sunday's contest against USF, he attempted four shots, two of which were on goal and one that nearly was called a goal before the officials called in an SCU foul. Martin leads the team in shots (21) and shots on goal (10). He also has two goals on the season.

In the WCC
This week SCU moved up in a couple of team rankings, while several players made their first appearances in the individual rankings. The Broncos are tied for second in shots, tied for third in goals-against average and tied for fourth in points and goals.

Individually, Martin and Jalil Anibaba entered the shots category at tied for ninth, while Cosgriff re-entered the goals category at tied for ninth as well. In WCC games only, Anibaba is fourth in shots, while Kellen Wantulok is fifth in goals and Mitchell is first in assists.

Scouting San Francisco
The Dons enter the weekend with a 4-7-1 overall record and a 3-2-0 WCC record. In their last outing, USF defeated LMU, 1-0, at home. Conor Chinn has scored a team-leading six goals already for the Dons, while Jeremy Coupe has a 4-4-1 record in goal with a 0.85 GAA and 21 saves.

Last Time Out vs. USF
Nov. 9, 2007 - Santa Clara defeated USF 2-1 on the road to improve to 7-0-2 in WCC play.
Oct. 12, 2007 - Santa Clara slipped past USF, 2-1, as Jalil Anibaba scored the game-winning goal with two seconds left in regulation.

All-Time vs. USF
Friday's contest marks the 55th meeting of the two programs in which USF leads the series, 28-19-7.

On Deck
Santa Clara returns to Buck Shaw Stadium for its final three home contests of the year. The Broncos battled the Zags of Gonzaga on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., and then take on the Pilots of Portland on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.
