Men's Soccer Hosts SMC In Senior Day Action

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team brings the 2008 home schedule to a close on Friday, Nov. 7 against long-time West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Broncos will celebrate Senior Day prior to the match by honoring Aaron Clubb, Brian Martin and Jide Ogunbiyi.

Last Time Out
The Broncos split the weekend with a 2-1 loss to the Bulldogs of Gonzaga and a 3-2 overtime victory over the Pilots of Portland. Junior Stephen McCarthy scored the lone goal against Gonzaga, while freshman Eric Masch scored the game-winning goal against Portland.

Bronco Watch
Freshman Connor Mitchell took over as the team's points leader. With his goal against Portland on Sunday, he now has three goals and three assists for nine points. Jeff Cosgriff also has three goals and two assists for eight points. In goal, Kevin Klasila continues to lead the Broncos with a 1.32 GAA and 34 saves.

Senior Day
On Friday, Santa Clara will honor its three men's soccer graduating seniors Aaron Clubb, Brian Martin and Jide Ogunbiyi. The pregame ceremony will begin just before starting lineups are introduced.

Clubb has seen action in 51 matches since his freshman year. Made the move to defense as a senior and has played an integral role in the Broncos back line starting in 14 of 17 games. For his career he has scored two goals, dished out three assists.

Martin has become an offensive threat for Santa Clara this season. Since joining the Broncos in 2006, he has scored six goals, dished out nine assists and compiled 21 points. He leads the 2008 squad with shots on goal (10). Martin was an All-WCC honoree in 2006 and recently received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII honors for his work on the field and in the classroom.

Ogunbiyi has made an impact on the Broncos from day one. This season he returned to being a fixture in the backline. Known for his size and agility, Ogunbiyi is a three-time All-WCC honor and earned NSCAA All-Far West region second team accolades as a junior. He has scored 11 goals, dished out eight assists and compiled 30 career points.

Klasila And The Record Books
The Bronco keeper's career goals against average of 0.84 jumped him into the all-time record book this season. After the past weekend, Klasila ranks No. 8 on the all-time list.

Monster Masch
San Jose native Masch scored his first two collegiate goals Sunday afternoon against Portland. Masch's first goal gave Santa Clara a 2-1 lead in the second half, while his second goal was the game-winning punch in the 99th minute.

Mitchell Strikes Again
Freshman Mitchell notched his third strike of the season Sunday afternoon to tie the score for the first time against the Pilots. He is now tied for first on the team with three goals.

Godrej Earns First Win
Freshman keeper Naushad Godrej got his first career start against Portland on Sunday and earned his first collegiate win as well. He collected two saves in the effort and is second on the team with a 1.83 GAA.

Martin Earns Academic All-District Honors
Senior forward Martin has been a consistent offensive force for the Broncos this season and for his efforts on the field and in the classroom, he was named to ESPN the Magazine's Academic All-District VIII First Team. He is third on the team with 21 shots and tied for first with Jalil Anibaba and Kellen Wantulok with 10 shots on goal. He also has two goals on the season.

In the WCC
This week SCU remains in second place in shots and moved up to third in points and goals. Individually, Mitchell is 10th in points and tied for 10th along with Cosgriff in goals. In assists, he and Zimmerman are tied for fourth. In WCC games only, Santa Clara leads the WCC in shots and is third in assists. Individually, Mitchell is tied for second in assists, while Alex Fitschen is tied for sixth.

Scouting Saint Mary's
The Gaels enter the weekend with a 4-8-3 overall record and a 3-3-2 WCC mark. Yousef Samy leads Saint Mary's with 11 points on five goals and one assist. In goal, Jason Badger has a 4-7-3 record with two shutouts, 54 saves and a 1.30 GAA.

Last Time Out vs. SMC
Oct. 12, 2008 - The Broncos battled to a 1-1 draw with the Gaels in Moraga. Anibaba scored the lone goal for the Broncos.

All-Time vs. Saint Mary's
Friday marks the 42nd meeting of the two programs in a series that Santa Clara leads 35-2-4.

On Deck
Santa Clara takes to the road for its two final contests of the 2008 regular season. The Broncos travel south to face the Lions of Loyola Marymount on Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. and then battle the Toreros of San Diego on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.
