SPOKANE, Wash. - The Santa Clara men's soccer (2-6-2, 0-2-0 WCC) team fell 2-1 in a hard-fought overtime match against Gonzaga (5-4-1, 2-1-0) Sunday afternoon.
Ben Funkhouser scored the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs at 97:33 on a 30-yard shot past Bronco keeper Kevin Klasila. The left-footed shot from the left wing found the far side of the net.
Santa Clara took a 1-0 halftime lead at 42:59 when sophomore Kellen Wantulok scored following a Gonzaga giveaway in the defensive zone. Freshman Connor Mitchell fed an ideal cross from the right wing to the middle and Wantulok beat Gonzaga keeper Scott Barnum with a low, hard shot from 12 yards out.
However, at 80:40 the Bulldogs tied the match. Nick Heinrichs fed a pass to Funkhouser who led Mitchell Weller with a ball up the middle for a shot from the top of the 18. Gonzaga tried to take the one-goal lead in the final two minutes of regulation but Klasila made a chest-high save in the 88th minute.
The Broncos return to action on Sunday, Oct. 12 against the Gaels of Saint Mary's. Kick off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Moraga.
