Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Jeff Cosgriff scored his third goal of the season as Santa Clara handed San Diego its first West Coast Conference loss of the season Sunday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Broncos (3-6-4, 1-2-2 WCC) defeated the Toreros (4-6-3, 4-1-0 WCC), 1-0, and are riding a three-game undefeated streak.

The Broncos held control of the ball in the first half. Quickly out of the gates, Santa Clara began to apply pressure to San Diego's defense. The first shot of the afternoon was taken by Kellen Wantulok at the end of the seventh minute, but was blocked by the Torero defense. Santa Clara struck again at 11:27 but, once again, the attempt was denied.

Santa Clara nearly made it a 1-0 game in the 21st minute as Brian Martin completed a corner kick from Brian Brungger. Martin's shot found the upper right corner of the net, but a foul was called on Santa Clara in the play.

Then in the 25th minute the Broncos struck gold. Martin received the ball about 16 yards out and sent the ball directly at USD's keeper Kelin Briones, who made the save. However, Briones bobbled the ball back into play and to the feet of junior Jeff Cosgriff. He made the connection and powered the ball to the upper corner of the far post.

Freshman Connor Mitchell tried to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead going into the break, but his shot at 29:35 was saved by Briones.

During the second half, Santa Clara held off seven San Diego attempts at knotting the score. Santa Clara had a 6-2 shots on goal advantage over San Diego.

The Broncos return to action next weekend with two games against the Dons of San Francisco. SCU hosts USF on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. and then travels up to The City on Sunday, Oct. 26 for 7 p.m. first kick.
