Men’s Tennis Suffers First Loss of Season at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Santa Clara men's tennis dropped its first match of the season on Sunday at City Park Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans. Tulane overpowered the Broncos swept the competition with a 7-0 win. 

The Green Wave (4-1), a team receiving votes in the Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings released on Feb. 1, opened up the day by claiming the doubles point. Sophomore Andrew Gu and freshman Vasileios Iliopoulos came up short on court two, losing 6-3. Sophomores Connor Garnett and Robert Seby fell on court one by a score of 6-4, sealing the doubles point for Tulane.

Seby took Constantin Schmitz to three sets in singles play and gave him everything he could handle on court one. But, in the end Schmitz won, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8). Schmitz is ranked No. 54 in the most recent (Jan. 4) Oracle/ITA Men's National Singles Rankings. Freshman Jesus Tapiador Barajas on court four and Iliopoulos on five both challenged their respective opponents in their second sets but were unable to get over the hump for the win.

SCU (4-1) returns home to face Nevada on Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. PT followed by a matchup with UNLV on Feb. 12 at 11 a.m.
