Men’s Tennis Garners WCC Recognition

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis was recognized by the West Coast Conference on Wednesday as the league announced its 2016-17 season honors. Sophomores Andrew Gu and Robert Seby were named to the All-WCC Singles Second Team. Sophomore Connor Garnett and freshman Vasileios Iliopoulos were named to the All-WCC Doubles Honorable Mention team along with Seby and freshman Jesus Tapiador Barajas.

Seby boasted a singles record of 9-9 (9-8 on court one, 0-1 on court two) in dual match play on the year. Gu owns a match play record of 13-5 (13-4 on court two, 0-1 on court one) and went 5-2 in WCC matches. For both student-athletes it is their first time making the All-WCC Singles Second Team. Seby was an honorable mention honoree in 2015-16.

Garnett and Iliopoulos played on court one in doubles for the second half of the season and went 4-6 overall. The duo earned wins against Grand Canyon, Army, Gonzaga and San Francisco. In total, SCU won the doubles point in 11 of its 21 matches.

Seby and Barajas went 7-6 in doubles play, going 1-2 on court one but then 6-4 on court two. The pairing went 5-4 in conference matches, helping the Broncos reach the WCC Tournament as the No. 6 seed. 

The Broncos are set to play BYU in the opening round of the WCC Tournament on Thursday at 1 p.m. PT.
