Men’s Tennis’ Garnett Claims 2017 WCC Male Sportsmanship Award

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The West Coast Conference recognized sophomore Connor Garnett of Santa Clara men's tennis as the winner of the 2017 WCC Male Sportsmanship Award.

Per the WCC, Garnett was selected based on his dedication to being a great representation of his conference, institution, team and himself. Garnett is an example of value-based leadership and character, which was further exemplified through his acts of sportsmanship.

Garnett had a very strong year on and off the court as he was named to the All-WCC Doubles Honorable Mention team and earned WCC All-Academic accolades. He posted a 14-4 singles record during dual match play, competing on court three throughout the season. Garnett partnered with freshman Vasileios Iliopoulos for doubles play and the duo went 4-6 during the second half of the season.

"One of the toughest aspects of any sport is to attain the right balance between doing what is required to win without jeopardizing your integrity as an athlete," head coach Niall Angus said. "Connor has exemplified what happens when you get this balance right. His consistent approach to good sportsmanship by being a fierce yet fair competitor has exemplified what it means to be a college athlete at Santa Clara and I am extremely pleased that he has been recognized by the WCC."

Garnett succeeded in the classroom as well. He boasts a 3.405 cumulative GPA and is pursuing a degree in business.

Garnett has been invited to attend the WCC Honors Dinner on June 7, 2017 in Rednondo Beach, California.
