SCU Women’s Golf Strengthens Roster for Upcoming Season

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University women's golf program has added a pair of accomplished players to its 2011-12 roster, including Houston Baptist's Balbina Guajardo (right), the reigning Great West Conference 'Player of the Year', and University of Louisville redshirt freshman Morgan McClure (left).

"Balbina is coming to the Mission Campus after an impressive year at Houston Baptist and I have a feeling she will contend for our top spot this season," said second-year Santa Clara head women's golf coach Krystal Kelly. "Morgan is coming to us from Louisville, a program ranked in the top-30, and I believe she will be a great leader for our squad in the years to come."

Guajardo, a native of Monterrey, Mexico, is one of the country's most talented young players. She is a three-time Mexican National Champion, member of the Mexican Team, and was named the 'International Player of the Year' on the 2008-09 Texas Junior Golf Tour.

Guajardo has led Houston Baptist to back-to-back Great West Conference titles, most recently finishing fourth overall at the 2011 GWC Championships, where she was named the GWC 'Player of the Year' and First Team All-GWC. As a freshman in 2010, she was the league's 'Newcomer of the Year' and has earned the GWC 'Player of the Week' award numerous times.

McClure was one of the top prep players in Arizona before signing with Louisville prior to the 2009-10 season. McClure finished seventh overall in the 2008 Arizona 4A State Tournament as a junior at Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson. She was named the 'One to Watch' that same year by the Arizona Daily Star.

McClure was Catalina Foothills' Sophomore Class President the same season the Falcons won the 2007 4A State Championship. She finished that year as the top ranked player in Southern Arizona. She redshirted at Louisville as a true freshman and played in one tournament for the Cardinals in 2010-11. An outstanding student, she was Louisville's 2010 Student-Athlete Athletic Council Representative for women's golf.

"Both of these players will be tremendous assets to our program," added Kelly. "They each possess the attributes that will help us become more competitive week in and week out. We can't wait to tee it up in September!"
