The Californian Names Signee Meghan Shain its 'Girls Golf Player of the Year'

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara University Broncos women's golf signee Meghan Shain (Bakersfield, Calif./Frontier High School) has been named The Californian's Girls Golf Player of the Year, an award recognizing the top prep player in the San Joaquin Valley.

The high school senior is part of an outstanding incoming class Santa Clara second-year women's golf head coach Krystal Kelly has signed for the 2012-13 season.

The Californian's article details some of Shain recent accomplishments, which include: Women's record scores of 68 at Haggerty-North Kern and 67 at The Links at RiverLakes Ranch, her home course; the Women's City Amateur Championship; a 74.7 stroke average during the regular season to lead the area; and, most notably, survival in a CIF Southern Cal regional playoff that allowed her to become the first Central Section player to reach the state championships.

Next season's incoming class also includes some of Northern California's top players in Sadie Strain (Arbuckle, Calif./Christian Brothers), Monique Riley (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley High School) and Ashley Noda (Roseville, Calif./St. Francis High School).

This year's 2012 spring season begins the weekend of February 18-19, when the Broncos compete at Stanford's Peg Barnard Invitational in Palo Alto.
