SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team won its own SCU Colby Invitational at Silver Creek Country Club with sophomore Taylor Camany claiming the Bill Kahl Trophy as the individual medalist. Camany fired rounds of 75-74 to edge teammate Balbina Guajardo for the top spot on the tournament leaderboard.
"We are really excited, we had a great tournament here at the Colby," said second-year Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly, who led the Broncos to their first-ever team victory in the 13-year history of the event. "Rounds of 304 and 307 were our lowest of the season. I think this will definitely help us carry momentum into our next tournament in two weeks."
The victory for Camany, a sophomore from Salinas, was the first of her young collegiate career. An All-West Coast Conference honoree as a freshman, Camany led the field with five birdies and was a tournament-best 2-under par on the par 3s.
"It's an honor to win out here on our home course, and to get the team win as well," said Camany. "The team has been working really hard to be in position to win tournaments. We have been switching up our practices a little bit to put us under some more pressure. It's great to see the hard work paying off."
Guajardo posted solid rounds of 75-75 to place second overall; she led the field in pars with 26. The reigning tournament champion, Tamara Surtees, overcame a slow start Tuesday to post a 77 and finish fourth. As a group, Santa Clara won the tournament by 20 strokes over Cal Poly and were 39 shots better than Northern Colorado.
