PALM DESERT, Calif. – Led by senior Annie Freman, Santa Clara women's golf shot a tournament record 882 to capture the team title at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, completed today at the 6,112-yard, par-72 Classic Club.
Holding a slim three-shot lead entering Sunday's final round, the Broncos matched their second-round tournament-low with a 292 to hold off runner-up Cal Poly by five shots. Santa Clara bettered Fresno State's 2012 team tournament record by three shots.
"The team played very well this week," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "The best word to describe them is resilient. They played smart and when things didn't go their way, they bounced back. We've struggled with this course in the past so it was nice to shoot some great scores."
Freman added to her program record by capturing individual medalist honors for the sixth time in her career. She shot a final-round even-par 72 to win the event by six-shots over Hawai'i's Isabella Leung and Southern Utah's Kamonwan Prasurtwong with a 6-under 210 total. Freman was the only player to complete 54 holes with a below par score.
"Annie was solid this week," Kelly added. "It was so fun watching her."
Junior Kyleigh Moreno shot an even-par 72 on Sunday to claim her highest finish as Bronco. Moreno's 5-over 221 total moved her into a sixth-place tie. "Kyleigh also played really well," Kelly noted. "She is becoming one of the players we count on to turn in a good score."
Junior Kristin Le overcame a quadruple bogey on her seventh hole of the day to finish with an even-par 72. She tied for 10th with a 6-over 222 total. "Kristin had an incredible comeback today. After making a quad, she rallied back and shot even par," Kelly said.
Freshman Chloe Wong shot a 229 total to finish tied for 24th and sophomore Keilyn Ing finished with a 254 total. Competing as an individual, Isabella Salant carded a final-round 2-over 74 to place in a tie for 42nd with a 238 total.
The team will return to action on Oct. 22 at the Cal Poly Lady Mustang Invitational.
