Women's Soccer Has Two Named to Preseason All-WCC Team

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer had two players named to the 2014 All-WCC Preseason Team on Tuesday. Senior Sofia Huerta, recently named to the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Watch List, and sophomore Jordan Jesolva were the two Broncos honored. Santa Clara was also picked to finish third in the WCC behind BYU and Portland. The Broncos, Cougars, and Pilots all received three first place votes from the league's coaches, with San Diego picking up the final first place vote.

"We're happy to be picked in the top-three of the conference but we have to earn that," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "Hopefully our non-conference schedule will prepare us for a very good conference season. We've got a lot of respect for each and every team in the conference. Sometimes when you're picked high in the conference like we are you get a bigger target on your back but we feel good about our group and about our chances. If you're somewhere in the upper half of the group you have a chance at the championship and that's our goal every year when we get to conference."

Huerta led Santa Clara last year with 16 goals and 40 points while tying for the team lead with eight assists. She was named Third Team All-American, First Team All-West Region, and First Team All-WCC.

Jesolva found the back of the net five times and added two assists for 12 points. She was named All-WCC Honorable Mention and made the Freshman All-WCC Team.

"I'm very happy for Sofia and Jordan who are both outstanding players," said Smith. "Sofia is coming off an All-American season and was named to the Hermann Watch List so obviously she's very deserving. Jordan is already being picked for the All-Conference team in her sophomore year and that talks a lot about her talent. We're going to be looking at those two players to create a lot of opportunities at the front of our team."
