Huerta Co-Player of the Year, Tostanoski Goalkeeper of the Year; Four Other Broncos Honored by WCC

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the second time in as many years, the West Coast Conference Player of the Year comes from Santa Clara women's soccer. Senior Sofia Huerta was named co-Player of the Year while Andi Tostanoski was Goalkeeper of the Year. Both Huerta and Tostanoski were also named All-WCC First Team while Brittany Ambrose was All-WCC Second Team. Dani Weatherholt was Honorable Mention while Jenna Holtz was Honorable Mention and All-Freshman. Mariana Galvan also made the All-Freshman team.

"We're very proud of the six players that we had recognized at the All-Conference level," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "It is the second year in a row for us getting a Player of the Year. Julie Johnson won it last year and Sofia being co-Player of the Year with Ashley Hatch is a wonderful honor along with Andi Tostanoski winning Goalkeeper of the Year. It's really hard to be best in your conference at anything, and to have two players recognized as best in our conference is wonderful."

"I'm so excited to receive this award," said Huerta. "Being honored as Player of the Year is something that has always been a goal of mine. For it to finally happen is exhilarating. I really want to thank my teammates and Jerry Smith for being the main reason I am receiving this award. Their ability to push me and be of constant support has helped me grow not only as a soccer player, but more importantly as a person. Also, congratulations to Ashley Hatch for also receiving this award as well. She has a bright future ahead of her."

"I'm humbled to be recognized for this award but I would never have been able to do my job without the girls in front of me," said Tostanoski. "I would just like to recognized my teammates and coaches. I'm so blessed to be a part of such an amazing and supportive family."

Huerta was second in the conference with 17 goals and 37 points. She attempted 94 shots and 49 on goal while scoring six game-winners. She accounted for over 50% of the Broncos goals this year. This is the 10th time a Bronco as won WCC Player of the Year.

"Sofia had a little bit of a slow start to the conference season but in those last four games scored seven goals," said Smith. "Our back was against the wall in terms of possible inclusion in the NCAA Tournament and Sofia, in terms of the offensive production, put the team on her back scoring seven of our last nine goals. She ended up with eight conference goals and 17 goals throughout the year. Seventeen goals in a season is really difficult, nearly a goal per game, particularly with the type of schedule that we play and I think really was the primary target of the most defenses that we've played. Sometimes it's difficult for someone to score that many goals when there aren't that many people around you scoring goals but Sofia was able to do that for us."

Tostanoski played almost every minute in net for Santa Clara and allowed 21 goals for a 1.06 GAA. She made 74 saves for a .779 save percentage while picking up eight solo shutouts, tied for most in the conference, and contributing the majority of the minutes to two more. This is the second time a Bronco has won Goalkeeper of the Year, after Bianca Henninger in 2011.

"Andi was not only an awesome goalkeeper in terms of shot stopping and cutting out crosses and distribution but her leadership for our team was really incredible," said Smith. "Sofia and Andi are our two team captains so we're always happy when our two team captains have great seasons but I'm really, really happy for Andi. She definitely does so many little things that we appreciate in our program. Not the least of which is her outstanding leadership at the back of our team."

Ambrose was second on the team with six goals and 15 points. She tied for second on the team in assists with three as well. She scored four game-winners, including one in the 4-3 comeback win vs. Fresno State.

"Brittany came on for us and scored some very key goals for us in league and was one of our hardest working players," said Smith. "Between Dani and Brittany and their energy and effort in our midfield really propelled us to second place in our conference which the whole team is very, very proud of."

Holtz, a freshman, stepped in and made a big impact in her nine games. She helped anchor the backline while adding an assist.

"I'm happy for Jenna Holtz, making the All-Freshman Team," said Smith. "She's a player that we didn't play in our non-conference schedule and tried to redshirt. Due to injuries she played in every conference game for us and was a wonderful player for us."

Weatherholt started all 20 games for a Bronco team struck by the injury bug. Her steady play helped solidify the midfield and she had an assist to go with 16 shots and five on goal.

"Dani is our workhorse, our engine, our warrior and does all the little things that nobody really recognizes," said Smith. "I'm very, very happy for Dani being named Honorable Mention."

Galvan tied for third on the team with three goals and added an assist. She attempted 16 shots and seven on goal while scoring a game-winner.

"I'm very, very happy for Mariana Galvan to have gone through three ACL injuries and to be recognized as a member of the All-Freshman Team," said Smith. "It's a reward for a lot of hard work that she's put into recovering from those injuries."
