Jenna Holtz Reflects on Her Freshman Season

Dylan Lynch '16

Since joining the Bronco women's soccer team last summer, freshman Jenna Holtz (JH) was quick to make an impact on the team, tallying eight starts in her nine appearances as a Bronco.  Holtz is spending her offseason focusing on continuing to grow as a player and a teammate.  She talked with Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) about her offseason training and how the team continues to work on their chemistry both on and off the field.

SCB: What are you doing to prepare for next season?

JH: Since we are in the off-season, our team does weights everyday and then, depending on the day, we will either do field conditioning or have a normal practice with the ball. Right now we have weekends off, but a lot of us go in on Saturday morning to lift and do some conditioning.

SCB: What was the most difficult part of your transition from high school to Division 1 soccer?
JH: The most difficult part of transitioning from high school to college was the speed of play. Everything is just a lot quicker but with the same amount of precision. You never really have that much free time on the ball, players are always right there to close you down.
SCB: Many of your teammates emphasize the chemistry on and off the field that your team has, how do you continue to strengthen that?
JH: Our chemistry is awesome. It is crazy how quickly we all bonded and how comfortable I feel around them. Practicing and being together everyday automatically strengthens that but even in our free time we choose to hang out together. All of us freshmen eat dinner together pretty much every night and we often invite some of the upperclassmen so they can get a free meal.
SCB: What have you been able to learn from the upperclassmen on the team?
JH: It is all about what you make of it. Just watching the players with really good attitudes that work hard seem to have the most fun and get the most out of every practice. Every day is an opportunity to improve yourself.
SCB: Do you have any pregame rituals/superstitions?
JH: Not really, I guess the only thing I'll usually do has to do with my shin guards. Sofia gave me her old shin guards that have the eye of a tiger on one and a character from Austin Powers on the other and I'll put the eye of a tiger one on my left leg.
