Santa Clara, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis team competed in the first day of the Cal Winter Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. Friday. The entire Bronco roster had the opportunity to showcase their talents in this first round of the event of the 2013 regular season. The second day of the round-robin contest continues Saturday with Santa Clara taking on No.42 Saint Mary's in doubles and No. 60 Fresno State in singles.

"We put up a tough fight against a high-ranked Saint Mary's in singles. I was happy to see the girls battle during these close matches all the way to the end," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "Jessica and Stephanie both did a great job coming out on top of their three set matches. Maggie and Alex also did not give up when the match went to the third set, which I was happy about."

In singles, No. 26 Katie Le was defeated by West Coast Conference rival No. 64 Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's. After battling through the first set but falling 7-5 to Jullien, Le could not turn the match around and fell in the second set 6-3. This is Le's third loss of the 2012-13 season and second loss to a ranked player.

The Broncos two singles points came from senior Jessica Agra and sophomore Stephanie Skaras. Agra took down her competition, Hannah Lijekvist of Saint Mary's, in three sets by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. This is Agra's third win of her senior campaign. Skaras tallied her seventh win of the season by topping Audrey Leitz 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles, Santa Clara put up a good effort but came up empty handed against No. 7 Cal. They look to improve in the doubles field against Saint Mary's Saturday.

"With our full-strength doubles line up ready, the confidence level is high looking forward to the Saint Mary's doubles competition tomorrow. And we continue to improve in our match fitness with the singles duals against Fresno State. The goal of this tournament is to get in a lot of matches and play well," said Cabell.
