SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis team tests its three-match winning steak against Southern Methodist University on Wed., March 13 at 3:30 p.m. at home in the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos (5-4; 1-0 WCC) take on this non-conference opponent before playing their second WCC match against BYU on March 23.

After a home sweep over Pacific on March 2, the Santa Clara women's tennis team tallied its first 2013 West Coast Conference win at the University of San Francisco by a score of 4-3. At USF, the Broncos were unable to capture the doubles point and were forced to battle in the singles matches. The team won four individual victories to take the match from its Bay Area rival, 4-3.

In singles play against USF, the Broncos tallied wins at the No. 2, 4, 5, and 6 positions. Australian native Stephanie Skaras topped Yurie Hashiguchi in two straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 6 position. Delphine Rouvillois was equally as successful at the No. 5 spot as she defeated Marina Nikolic of the Dons, 6-4, 6-4.

In addition, Senior Kelly Lamble and freshman Chelby Cooke both battled though grueling three-set matches to give the Broncos their first WCC victory of the season. At the No. 2 spot, Lamble posted a 7-6(4) to take the first set. She proceeded to drop the second, 3-6, but was able to overcome Sofia Holmberg in the final set to win 6-2. Cooke fell in her first set against Brooke Irish by a score of 5-7, but flew through the next two sets, 6-1, 6-3. 

The Broncos seek out a non-conference win against SMU this Wednesday to prepare them for their second WCC match against BYU on March 23.

Southern Methodist University

The SMU Mustangs, as of March 11, post a 7-5 overall record for the 2013 dual season and are 1-1 in Conference USA competition. Currently traveling on a three-match West Coast road trip, the Mustangs make Santa Clara their third and final stop. SMU recently lost to No. 24 UC Irvine by a score of 5-2, and they will have played UC Santa Barbara on March 12 at 3 p.m. SMU's most recent notable win came on March 8 when they topped No. 22 University of Tulsa by a score of 4-3.

No. 30 Katie Le

On Tues., Feb. 26, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released updated rankings. The Broncos' own Katie Le dropped five spots in the standings From No. 25 to No. 30 nationally. Le improved her 5-3 dual singles record and 7-2 dual doubles record against Pacific and USF on March 2 and 3 and looks to tally another win against SMU on Wednesday.
