Women's Tennis Hosts Pacific on Saturday.; Travels for WCC Opener at USF on Sunday

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—After a successful return to the Mission Campus on Feb. 24, the Santa Clara women's tennis team faces two opponents this weekend. On Sat., March 2, the Broncos take on the University of the Pacific at 11:00 a.m. in the Degheri Tennis Center. The following day, Sunday, March 3, Santa Clara travels for its West Coast Conference opener at Bay Area rival University of San Francisco at 12:00 p.m. in Golden Gate Park.

The Broncos (3-4) enter this weekend after recording a victory over a Cal Poly. Playing for points, the 4-0 win brought head coach Ben Cabell and the squad their first triumph over the Mustangs in Cabell's six years of coaching Santa Clara tennis.

In the singles competition against Cal Poly, sophomore Stephanie Skaras swept her Mustang opponent Anna Klavins without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0. Then-No. 25 Katie Le, also defeated her competitor Jen Corena at the No. 1 singles position. Le finished off the match by a score of 6-3, 6-1 to improve her singles dual record to 4-2.

On Tues., Feb. 26, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released updated rankings. The Broncos' own Katie Le dropped five spots in the standings to No. 30 nationally. Le looks to improve her 4-2 dual singles record and 6-1 dual doubles record against Pacific and USF this weekend.

Pacific

The Tigers post a 5-4 overall record for the 2013 regular season. Recently they fell to Northern Arizona, 4-2, and San Jose State, 6-1. On Jan. 26, Pacific came up short against the USF Dons in its spring home opener by a score of 6-1. They compete in their first Big West Conference match on Sun., March 3, against Cal Poly following the Santa Clara match.

San Francisco

The Dons, who are 5-2 in the 2013 regular season, recently topped Cal Poly on Sat., Feb. 23 by a score of 6-1. The Dons dropped the doubles point for the third consecutive match but stormed back to take all six singles matches, including four three-set affairs. Other notable wins this season for San Francisco were over UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, and UC Davis, 4-3. The Dons two losses are from San Jose State who defeated them 5-2 and from Fresno State by a score of 6-1. The match against Santa Clara will be the first WCC test for both of the teams.
